Anjana, one of our student ambassadors, listened to the “Call of the Wild” podcast as part of the 30 Days Wild Challenge:
“Call of the Wild,” hosted by Kel Spelman, a WWF podcast, talks about environmental threats and what we can do about them, and the theme of “home” in a changing climate, noting that an increase of 2°C could threaten 20-30% of species. WWF host Kel Spellman speaks with designer and sustainability enthusiast Kevin McCloud whose talks about the idea of “super insulated,” “carbon invisible” houses that lock in the warmth, cut bills and even pump clean energy back into the grid, and actor Iwan Rheon, a Welsh actor and musician who explains the Welsh idea of “Cynfin,”(rooted in place) a profound sense of belonging that fuels his passion to protect the natural world.
The podcast highlights the importance of small changes, such as the use of sustainable heating, better insulation, minimal use of appliances, and water conservation practices(like Kevin McCloud’s controversial “if it’s yellow, let it mellow” approach) can collectively make a significant impact. In addition the podcast highlights the importance of peaceful coexistence with nature, referencing the efforts to protect African lion populations and the “Walrus from Space” initiative. Both guests find hope in the younger generations and how they can improve the world. The WWF “My Footprint” application is suggested as a resource for more information.
